Milo Community School is located in the rolling hills of Southern Alberta on the northeastern edge of Lake McGregor, half way between Calgary and Lethbridge. The village of Milo has a population of approximately 120 residents and is surrounded by a rural population, primarily engaged in grain farming. The Siksika Nation borders the attendance areas to the north.
An innovative method of delivering education, a four-day school week, was implemented in 1994 and has received permanent status from the Board of Trustees. Students, parents, staff and community members strongly support this concept. The school serves a student population of 80 in grades 1 to 9, with approximately 40% of these students traveling from the Siksika Nation. The staff complement includes 4.5 teachers, a secretary, community school coordinator, library clerk, native liaison assistant and six classroom assistants. We also have a video-conferencing classroom in the building which allows teachers and classes to connect with each other and also makes distance learning a reality for our school. A privately run community kindergarten is housed in the facility, offering a two-day per week program. The Municipal Library is also located on site, increasing the availability of resources for students and staff, however the library will be moving into a brand new facility sometime in 2007.
With a family-oriented atmosphere and a pupil-teacher ratio of less than 20:1, the focus is to blend the home, the school and the community to best serve the needs of the students. Community resources include a curling rink, skating arena, bike path and a supportive business center. Work experience stations have been utilized within the village for several years. An integrated program for students with special needs is supported by a consulting teacher and classroom assistants. A computer lab, complete with 14 new Compaq computers with access to the Internet ,CD burners, an L.C.D projector and smart board, enhances a strong academic program as well as providing opportunities for adult learning classes. The school has earned a reputation for its annual Christmas production. Private piano lessons are offered during the course of the school day for anyone who is interested. Students participate in volleyball, basketball, curling and badminton team sports, an annual swimming, camping trip, down hill ski trips and cultural activities provide a well-rounded, quality education program.
